The world top shares of original ship monitor and control systems.
Kyokudozan  KEI System Co., Ltd. seems to be engaged in development and production of ship-related products since the establishment.
Nakagawa  Yes. Since the foundation in 1986, the 17th year already comes around.
 Although I think it is unfamiliar for the public, in the ship various equipments are installed in a complicated way including the engine with numbers of times as much power as a car.  In our company, we mainly develop and produce the computer system which watches and controls them.  We also do collaborative researches, developments and the technical consulting business of merchandising with requests from other companies.
Kyokudozan What led you to establish the company?
Nakagawa  Originally I had been working in an electrical control product company which dealt with switchboards etc. and became to know the system of such vessel specialty, and I started to wish to make better systems myself.
Kyokudozan How would you circulate your products?
Nakagawa  Our end users are of course the officers of a ship, but we mainly develop and produce the system so it is companies we directly deal with and from them our system is sold to a shipyard.  Although the products shipped from our company are basically our own brand, we have also produces those of brand name of customer's enterprise.
Kyokudozan Would you introduce your products?
Nakagawa ’†ì We develop and produce a system and software to operate ships, such as "Computer Data Logger System" which can carry out parallel processing of measurement, surveillance and the control, and a compact control system "Valve Control System" which has high-speed performance.
 As you know, as for a ship unlike a car, it is necessary that a group of officers and crew manages a post respectively and assists night and day operation.  However, using a surveillance and control software, a small number of officers can handle the whole vessel and the officers can take a rest properly.  Moreover, opening and closing of valves can be performed automatically if a "Valve Control System" is used and it is more rational.
 At the present stage, the products of ours are globally proud of the top share.  It seems that other companies cannot put out the hands easily since it is a complicated part controlling the core of a ship.
Kyokudozan  Because it is a very important to the life of the on board officers and the crew, it is the case that the highest technology in the world is required.  However, what kind of actions should be taken when something goes wrong in a ship?
Nakagawa  In our company, we construct the system which reports abnormality in the stage before a trouble occurs.  For example, the system informs the officers the investigated tendency in the stage before reaching abnormality when abnormal pressure was discovered, therefore a big trouble is beforehand avoidable.
Kyokudozan Indeed. In addition, what would you take care in the case of software development?
Nakagawa  Because inside the ship, the humidity could be very high and the vibration is strong, for the electrical product it is rather bad environment.  Besides, because the officers must handle entirely when a trouble happened during the sailing, we keep the software as simple as possible to handle it.  For example, when a PC does not work, it is difficult to detect where is wrong to amateurs, but it is a trouble during the sailing when there can be such a thing. So we keep the system which can be specified where to be bad.  Also with carrying along the spare equipments, if a problem arises, new equipment will be replaced automatically.
Kyokudozan It seems that you also adopt the GPS function.
Nakagawa  Yes. The vessel under operation can be contacted now from the sea in the world, thanks to the progress of technology.  Moreover, it can be operated now by remote control using a telephone line.
Kyokudozan How much operation is possible?
Nakagawa  Daily reports can be received using a telephone line, and when a problem happens, it can be diagnosed and get a solution from the data.  In addition, when a little complicated maintenance such as replacement is necessary, the exchange method is indicated from Japan, and it is possible to practice by the officers.
Kyokudozan  The safety is easily securable then.  Former times it was a common sense that once you come out to the sea, you cannot take communication till you return, so this is a big progress.
 Finally let me hear prospects of KEI System Co., Ltd. in the future.
Nakagawa  I wish to offer the products which support a safe operation of a vessel and the officers, because the need of ship related products are expanding steadily in Europe, Korea and China, not only in Japan. We continue to do our best for developing and production aiming at the day when the products with "KEI" mark are carried in the vessels all over the world and recognized as the world standard machine.
